Ein Oxygenator ist ein medizinisches Gerät, das in der Lage ist, Sauerstoff und Kohlendioxid im Blut des menschlichen Patienten während chirurgischer Eingriffe auszutauschen, die die Unterbrechung oder Beendigung des Blutflusses im Körper, ein kritisches Organ oder ein großes Blutgefäß erfordern können. Diese Organe können das Herz, die Lunge oder die Leber sein, während die großen Gefäße die Aorta, die Lungenarterie, die Lungenvenen oder die Hohlvene sein können. Ein Oxygenator wird typischerweise von einem Perfusionisten in der Herzchirurgie in Verbindung mit der Herz-Lungen-Maschine verwendet. Allerdings können Oxygenatoren auch in der extrakorporalen Membranoxygenierung in neonatalen Intensivstationen von Krankenschwestern eingesetzt werden. Für die meisten kardialen Operationen wie Koronararterien-Bypass-Transplantation wird der kardiopulmonale Bypass mit einer Herz-Lungen-Maschine durchgeführt. Die Herz-Lungen-Maschine dient dazu, die Arbeit des Herzens während der offenen Bypass-Operation zu ersetzen. Die Maschine ersetzt sowohl die Pumpwirkung des Herzens als auch die Gasaustauschfunktion der Lunge. Da das Herz während der Operation gestoppt wird, erlaubt es dem Chirurgen, auf einem blutlosen, stationären Herzen zu operieren. Ein Bestandteil der Herz-Lungen-Maschine ist der Oxygenator.
