Die Ozonschicht wurde 1913 von den französischen Physikern Charles Fabry und Henri Buisson entdeckt. Seine Eigenschaften wurden im Detail von dem britischen Meteorologen G. M. B. Dobson erforscht, der ein einfaches Spektrophotometer entwickelte, das zur Messung von stratosphärischem Ozon aus dem Boden verwendet werden konnte. Zwischen 1928 und 1958 gründete Dobson ein weltweites Netzwerk von Ozonüberwachungsstationen, die bis heute in Betrieb bleiben. Die "Dobson-Einheit", ein bequemes Maß für die Menge an Ozon-Overhead, wird in seiner Ehre genannt.
