Moor
Ein Moor ist ein Sumpf, der Torf, eine Ablagerung von totem Pflanzenmaterial - oft Moose, und in einer Mehrheit von Fällen, Sphagnum Moos ansammelt. Es ist einer der vier Hauptarten der Feuchtgebiete. Andere Namen für Moore sind Schlamm, Sumpf und Muskeg; Alkalische Mäuse werden Fensen genannt. Sie sind häufig in ericaceous Sträuchern verwurzelt im Sphagnum Moos und Torf bedeckt. Die allmähliche Anhäufung von zerfallenem Pflanzenmaterial im Moor fungiert als Kohlenstoffsenke. Moore treten auf, wo das Wasser an der Bodenoberfläche sauer und niedrig in Nährstoffen ist. In einigen Fällen wird das Wasser vollständig aus dem Niederschlag abgeleitet, in welchem Fall sie ombrotrophisch genannt werden. Wasser, das aus Mooren fließt, hat eine charakteristische braune Farbe, die aus aufgelösten Torf-Tanninen stammt. Im Allgemeinen führt die niedrige Fruchtbarkeit und das kühle Klima zu einem relativ langsamen Pflanzenwachstum, aber der Zerfall ist aufgrund des gesättigten Bodens noch langsamer. Darum sammelt sich Torf. Große Flächen der Landschaft können viele Meter tief in Torf bedeckt werden. Moore haben ausgeprägte Assemblagen von Pflanzen- und Tierarten und sind für die Biodiversität von besonderer Bedeutung, vor allem in Landschaften, die ansonsten besiedelt und bewirtschaftet werden.
