"Pentarchie" ist ein Begriff in der Geschichte des Christentums für die Idee der universellen Herrschaft über die ganze Christenheit durch die Häupter der fünf großen bischöflichen Seen des Römischen Reiches: Rom, Konstantinopel, Alexandrien, Antiochien und Jerusalem. Die Idee entstand durch die politische und kirchliche Bedeutung dieser fünf Seen, aber der Begriff ihrer universellen und ausschließlichen Autorität war fest mit der Verwaltungsstruktur des Römischen Reiches verbunden. Die Idee des Pentarchies wurde erstmals in den Gesetzen des Kaisers Justinian I, besonders in Novella 131, spürbar ausgedrückt. Der Quinisext-Rat von 692 gab ihm eine formale Anerkennung und rangiert in der Reihenfolge der Vormachtstellung. Besonders nach Quinisext wurde das Pentarchium zumindest im östlichen Christentum philosophisch akzeptiert, aber im allgemeinen nicht im Westen, das den Rat abgelehnt hat. Die größere Autorität dieser Gesichter in Bezug auf andere war an ihre politische und kirchliche Bedeutung gebunden; Alle waren in wichtigen Städten und Regionen des Römischen Reiches und waren wichtige Zentren der christlichen Kirche.
