Nach der Unabhängigkeit im Jahre 1821 hat Peru Zeiten politischer Unruhen und Finanzkrise sowie Zeiten der Stabilität und des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs erlebt. Die Konjunkturzyklen basieren vor allem auf der Gewinnung von Rohstoffen wie Guano (1845-1866) und Gummi (ca. 1900). Peru ist eine repräsentative demokratische Republik, die in 25 Regionen unterteilt ist.
