Einfach gesagt, verringerte Arbeitslosigkeit, in einer Wirtschaft wird mit höheren Inflationsraten korrelieren. Während es einen kurzfristigen Kompromiss zwischen Arbeitslosigkeit und Inflation gibt, wurde es auf lange Sicht nicht beobachtet. 1968 behauptete Milton Friedman, dass die Phillips-Kurve nur kurzfristig anwendbar sei und dass die Inflationspolitik langfristig die Arbeitslosigkeit nicht senken wird. Friedman sagte dann richtig voraus, dass in den kommenden Jahren nach 1968 sowohl Inflation als auch Arbeitslosigkeit zunehmen würden. Die Langzeit-Phillips-Kurve wird nun als vertikale Linie bei der natürlichen Arbeitslosenquote gesehen, wo die Inflationsrate keine Auswirkung auf die Arbeitslosigkeit hat. Dementsprechend wird die Phillips-Kurve jetzt als zu einfach betrachtet, wobei die Arbeitslosenquote durch genauere Prädiktoren der Inflation, die auf der Geschwindigkeit der Geldversorgungsmaßnahmen beruht, wie die MZM-Geschwindigkeit, die von der Arbeitslosigkeit in kurzer aber nicht der langfristigen betroffen ist, verdrängt wird.
