Photic Zone
Die photic Zone, die euphotische Zone oder die Sonnenlichtzone ist die Tiefe des Wassers in einem See oder Ozean, der genügend Sonnenlicht ausgesetzt ist, damit Photosynthese auftritt. Es erstreckt sich von der Oberfläche bis zu einer Tiefe, wo die Lichtintensität auf ein Prozent von der an der Oberfläche, die so genannte euphotische Tiefe fällt. Dementsprechend hängt seine Dicke von dem Ausmaß der Lichtdämpfung in der Wassersäule ab. Typische euphotische Tiefen variieren von nur wenigen Zentimetern in stark trüben eutrophischen Seen, etwa 200 Meter im offenen Ozean. Es variiert auch mit saisonalen Veränderungen der Trübung. Da die Photonenzone nahezu die gesamte Primärproduktivität ist, ist die Tiefe der Photonenzone im allgemeinen proportional zum Niveau der Primärproduktivität, die in diesem Bereich des Ozeans auftritt. Etwa 90% aller maritimen Leben leben in der photic Zone. Eine kleine Menge an Primärproduktion wird tief in der Abgrundzone um die hydrothermalen Entlüftungen erzeugt, die an einigen mittelöstlichen Kämmen bestehen. Die Zone, die sich von der Basis der euphotischen Zone bis etwa 200 Meter erstreckt, wird manchmal als die disphotische Zone bezeichnet.
