Neun Familien von weitgehend baumartigen Vögeln bilden die Ordnung Piciformes, die bekanntesten sind die Picidae, die die Spechte und die nahen Verwandten einschließt. Sie reichen in der Größe von der Rufous Piculet mit 8 Zentimeter Länge und mit einem Gewicht von 7 Gramm, zum Toco Toucan, mit 63 Zentimeter Länge und einem Gewicht von 680 Gramm. Alle Nest in Hohlräumen und haben altricial jung.
