Placodermi ist eine aussterbende Klasse von gepanzerten prähistorischen Fischen, die aus Fossilien bekannt sind, die vom Silurian bis zum Ende der Devonzeit lebten. Ihr Kopf und Thorax wurden von gegliederten Panzerplatten bedeckt und der Rest des Körpers wurde je nach Art skaliert oder nackt. Placoderms gehörten zu den ersten Kiefernfischen; Ihre Kiefer entwickelten sich wahrscheinlich aus dem ersten ihrer Kiemenbögen. Placodermen sind paraphyletisch und umfassen mehrere verschiedene Outgroups oder Schwester Taxa für alle lebenden Kiefer Wirbeltiere, die in ihren Reihen entstanden sind. Dies wird durch ein 419 Millionen Jahre altes Fossil, Entelognathus aus China, illustriert, das der einzige bekannte Placoderm mit einer Art knöchernen Kiefers ist, wie er in modernen knöchernen Fischen gefunden wurde. Dazu gehört ein Zahnbein, der bei Menschen und anderen Tetrapoden gefunden wird. Die Kiefer in anderen Placodermen wurden vereinfacht und bestand aus einem einzigen Knochen. Placoderms waren auch die ersten Fische, um Beckenflossen zu entwickeln, die Vorstufe zu den Hinterbeinen in Tetrapoden, sowie wahre Zähne. 380 Millionen Jahre alte Fossilien von drei anderen Gattungen, Incistoscutum, Materpiscis und Austroptyctodus, stellen das älteste bekannte Beispiel der Lebendgeburt dar.
