American Pokeweed ist eine große halb-sukkulenten krautigen mehrjährigen Pflanze, die bis zu 10 Fuß in der Höhe wächst. Es ist auch bekannt als Virginia Poke, amerikanische Nachtschatten, Krebs Jalap, Coakum, Garget, Tintenbeere, Taube Beere, Pocan, Poker, Pokeweed, Pokeberry, Redweed, Scoke, rote Tinte Pflanze und chui xu shang lu. Manchmal wird die Pflanze auch als Pokersalat bezeichnet. Teile dieser Pflanze sind sehr giftig für Vieh und Menschen, und es gilt als ein großer Schädling von Landwirten. Weiße Blüten werden von lila bis fast schwarzen Beeren gefolgt, die eine gute Nahrungsquelle für Singvögel wie Grey Catbird, Northern Cardinal, Brown Thrasher und Northern Mockingbird sind.
