Ein Ammoniumion besteht aus einem Stickstoffatom und vier Wasserstoffatomen: es hat eine Ladung von +1, seine chemische Formel ist NH4 +. Polyatomische Ionen sind oft im Zusammenhang mit der Säure-Basen-Chemie oder bei der Bildung von Salzen nützlich. Ein polyatomisches Ion kann oft als die konjugierte Säure / Base eines neutralen Moleküls betrachtet werden. Beispielsweise ist die konjugierte Base von Schwefelsäure das mehratomige Schwefelwasserstoffanion.
