Prokaryoten sind haploide Organismen, mit nur einem einzigen Chromosom in jeder Zelle. Die meisten Eukaryonten haben diploide Zellen, produzieren aber haploide Gameten durch Meiose. In Pflanzen und multizellulären Algen ist die Gametophytenbildung haploid und produziert Gameten durch Mitose. Ein Monoploid hat nur einen Satz Chromosomen, und der Begriff wird gewöhnlich nur auf Zellen oder Organismen angewendet, die normalerweise diploid sind. Männliche Bienen und andere Hymenoptera sind zum Beispiel monoploid. Polyploidie bezieht sich auf eine numerische Veränderung in einem ganzen Satz von Chromosomen. Organismen, in denen ein bestimmtes Chromosom- oder Chromosomensegment unter- oder überrepräsentiert ist, sollen aneuploid sein.
