Porphyr (Geologie)
Porphyry ist eine Vielzahl von magmatischen Gesteinen, die aus großkörnigen Kristallen wie Feldspat oder Quarz bestehen, die in einer feinkörnigen feldspathischen Matrix oder Grundmasse dispergiert sind. Die größeren Kristalle heißen Phenokristalle. In seiner nicht-geologischen, traditionellen Verwendung bezieht sich der Begriff "Porphyr" auf die violett-rote Form dieses Steines, geschätzt für sein Aussehen. Der Begriff "Porphyr" ist aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet "lila". Lila war die Farbe des Königtums, und das "Imperial Porphyry" war ein tiefer lila magmatischer Fels mit großen Kristallen von Plagioklas. Der Felsen war am härtesten in der Antike bekannt und wurde für Denkmäler und Bauprojekte im Imperialen Rom und später geschätzt. Anschließend wurde der Name mit knöchernen Gesteinen mit großen Kristallen versehen. Porphyritic bezieht sich nun auf eine Textur von magmatischen Gesteinen. Sein Hauptmerkmal ist ein großer Unterschied zwischen der Größe der winzigen Matrixkristalle und anderen viel größeren Phänomenen. Porphyrien können Aphanite oder Phanerite sein, dh die Grundmasse kann unsichtbar kleine Kristalle wie Basalt haben, oder die einzelnen Kristalle der Grundmasse können leicht mit dem Auge, wie in Granit, unterschieden werden.
