Die Prämolarzähne oder Bikuspiden sind Übergangszähne, die sich zwischen dem Eckzahn und den Molaren befinden. Bei den Menschen gibt es zwei Prämolaren pro Quadranten in der permanenten Reihe von Zähnen, so dass acht Prämolaren insgesamt in den Mund. Sie haben mindestens zwei Höcker. Prämolaren können als "Übergangszahn" beim Kauen oder Mastikation betrachtet werden. Es hat Eigenschaften sowohl der anterioren Eckzähne als auch der posterioren Molaren, und so kann man von den Eckzähnen zu den Prämolaren und schließlich zu den Molaren zum Schleifen, statt direkt von den Eckzähnen zu den Molaren übertragen werden. Die Prämolaren beim Menschen sind der Oberkiefer-Prämolar, Oberkiefer-Zweitprämolar, Unterkiefer-Erstprämolar und der Unterkiefer-Zweitprämolar. Es gibt immer einen großen bukkalen Höcker, besonders im Unterkiefer ersten Prämolaren. Der untere zweite Prämolar präsentiert sich fast immer mit zwei lingualen Höckern. Molare Zähne per Definition sind permanente Zähne distal zu den Eckzähnen, vorangestellt von Laubprämolaren. Bei primitiven Plazenta-Säugetieren gibt es vier Prämolaren pro Quadranten. Die meisten mesialen zwei sind in Catarrhines verloren gegangen. Paläontologen beziehen sich auf menschliche Prämolaren als Pm3 und Pm4.
