Eine Pro-Form ist eine Art von Funktionswort oder Ausdruck, der für ein anderes Wort, eine Phrase, eine Klausel oder einen Satz steht, wo die Bedeutung aus dem Kontext wiederherstellbar ist. Sie werden entweder verwendet, um wiederholte Ausdrücke oder Quantifizierungen zu vermeiden. Pro-Formulare sind in mehrere Kategorien unterteilt, je nachdem, welche Teil der Rede sie ersetzen: ▪ Ein Pronomen ersetzt ein Substantiv oder eine Nominalphrase, mit oder ohne Bestimmungsort. ▪ Ein Pro-Adjektiv ersetzt ein Adjektiv oder eine Phrase, die als Adjektiv fungiert: so wie in "Es ist weniger so als wir erwartet hatten". ▪ Ein Pro-Adverb ersetzt ein Adverb oder eine Phrase, die als Adverb fungiert: wie und auf diese Weise. ▪ Ein Pro-Verb ersetzt ein Verb oder eine Verb-Phrase: do. ▪ Ein Prozeß ersetzt einen ganzen Satz oder Unterhalt: Ja oder das wie in "Das ist wahr". Eine befragliche Pro-Form ist eine Pro-Form, die den betreffenden Gegenstand bezeichnet und selbst in eine der oben genannten Kategorien fallen kann.
