Progeria
Progerien ist eine äußerst seltene genetische Störung, bei der Symptome, die Aspekten des Alterns ähneln, schon sehr früh manifestiert werden. Progeria ist eines von mehreren Progeroid-Syndromen. Das Wort Progerien stammt aus den griechischen Wörtern "Pro", dh "vor" oder "vorzeitig" und "gēras", was "altes Alter" bedeutet. Die Störung hat eine sehr niedrige Inzidenzrate, die in einer geschätzten 1 pro 8 Millionen Lebendgeburten auftritt. Diejenigen, die mit Progerien geboren sind, leben typischerweise zu ihren mittleren Jugendlichen bis Anfang der zwanziger Jahre. Es ist eine genetische Bedingung, die als neue Mutation auftritt und selten vererbt wird, da die Patienten normalerweise nicht leben, um sich zu vermehren. Obwohl der Begriff Progerien streng auf alle Krankheiten ankommt, die durch vorzeitige Alterungssymptome gekennzeichnet sind und häufig als solche verwendet werden, wird sie häufig spezifisch in Bezug auf Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria-Syndrom angewendet. Die Wissenschaftler interessieren sich besonders für Progerien, weil sie Hinweise auf den normalen Alterungsprozess geben könnten. Progeria wurde erstmals 1886 von Jonathan Hutchinson beschrieben. Es wurde auch im Jahre 1897 von Hastings Gilford beschrieben. Der Zustand wurde später Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria-Syndrom genannt.
