Der Programmhandel ist eine Art von Handel mit Wertpapieren, in der Regel bestehend aus Körben von fünfzehn Aktien oder mehr, die von einem Computerprogramm gleichzeitig auf der Grundlage vorgegebener Bedingungen ausgeführt werden. Der Programmhandel wird häufig von Hedgefonds und anderen institutionellen Anlegern genutzt, die Index-Arbitrage oder andere Arbitrage-Strategien verfolgen. Es gibt im Wesentlichen zwei Gründe für den Programmhandel, entweder wegen des Wunsches, eine große Anzahl von Aktien gleichzeitig zu handeln, oder alternativ zu arbitrage temporäre Preisdiskrepanzen zwischen verwandten Finanzinstrumenten, wie zwischen einem Index und seinen Bestandteilen.
