In der griechischen Mythologie ist Prometheus ein Titan in der griechischen Mythologie, der mit dem Zeus und den aufsteigenden olympischen Göttern in dem weiten kosmologischen Kampf gegen Cronos und den anderen herrschenden Titanen sitzt. Prometheus war also auf der erobernden Seite des kataklysmischen Krieges der griechischen mythologischen Götter, der sogenannten Titanomachien, wo Zeus und die olympischen Götter schließlich Cronos und die anderen vorherrschenden Titanen besiegten. Alte Mythen und Legenden beziehen sich auf mindestens vier Versionen der Erzählungen, die Prometheus beschreiben, seine Heldentaten mit Zeus und seine ewige Strafe, die auch von Zeus zugefügt wurde. Es gibt eine einzige, umfangreiche Version der Geburt von Prometheus und mehrere Varianten seiner Unterwerfung an das ewige Leiden am Willen des Zeus. Die bedeutendsten Erzählungen seines Ursprungs erscheinen in der "Theogenie" von Hesiod, die Prometheus als Sohn des Titan Iapetus von Clymene, einem der Ozeaniden, bezeichnet. Hesiod präsentiert dann Prometheus als Nachfolger für die Omnipotenz des Zeus.
