Protactinium
Protactinium ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Pa und der Ordnungszahl 91. Es ist ein dichtes, silbergraues Metall, das leicht mit Sauerstoff, Wasserdampf und anorganischen Säuren reagiert. Es bildet verschiedene chemische Verbindungen, in denen Protactinium gewöhnlich in der Oxidationsstufe +5 vorhanden ist, aber auch +4 und sogar +2 oder +3 Zustände annehmen kann. Die durchschnittlichen Konzentrationen von Protactinium in der Erdkruste liegen typischerweise in der Größenordnung von einigen Teilen pro Billion, können aber bis zu einigen Teilen pro Million in einigen Uraninit-Erzvorkommen erreichen. Wegen seiner Knappheit, hoher Radioaktivität und hoher Toxizität gibt es derzeit keine Verwendungen für Protactinium außerhalb der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, und zu diesem Zweck wird Protactinium meist aus verbrauchtem Kernbrennstoff gewonnen. Protactinium wurde erstmals 1913 von Kasimir Fajans und Oswald Helmuth Göhring identifiziert und als Brevium bezeichnet, wegen der kurzen Halbwertszeit des untersuchten spezifischen Isotops, nämlich Protactinium-234. Ein stabileres Isotop von Protactinium wurde 1917/18 von Otto Hahn und Lise Meitner entdeckt, und sie wählten den Namen Proto-Aktinium, aber dann nannte die IUPAC es schließlich Protactinium im Jahre 1949 und bestätigte Hahn und Meitner als Entdecker.
