Protostom
Protostomie sind eine Truppe von Tieren. Zusammen mit den Deuterostomen und einigen größeren Phyla bilden sie die Bilateria, vor allem Tiere mit bilateraler Symmetrie und drei Keimschichten. Die Hauptunterschiede zwischen Deuterostomen und Protostomen finden sich in der embryonalen Entwicklung. Bei Tieren, die mindestens so komplex sind wie die Regenwürmer, bildet der Embryo auf der einen Seite eine Delle, die Blastopore, die sich zum Erzherzon verdreht, die erste Phase des Darmwuchses. In Deuterostomen wird die ursprüngliche Delle zum Anus, während der Darm schließlich durchläuft, um eine weitere Öffnung zu machen, die den Mund bildet. Die Protostomen waren so genannt, weil es früher gedacht wurde, dass in ihren Embryonen die Delle den Mund bildete, während der Anus später gebildet wurde, an der Öffnung, die durch das andere Ende des Darms gemacht wurde. Neuere Forschungen zeigen jedoch, dass in den Protostomen die Kanten der Delle in der Mitte auftauchen und an den Enden, die zum Mund und Anus werden, Öffnungen hinterlassen. Allerdings ist diese Idee herausgefordert worden, denn die Acoelomorpha, eine Gruppe, die die Schwestergruppe für den Rest der bilaterianischen Tiere sein kann, hat einen einzigen Mund, der in einen blinden Darm führt.
