Pytheas
Pytheas von Massalia, war ein griechischer Geograph und Entdecker aus der griechischen Kolonie Massalia. Er machte eine Reise der Erkundung nach Nordwesteuropa um etwa 325 v. Chr. In dieser Reise reiste er um und besuchte einen bedeutenden Teil Großbritanniens. Er ist die erste Person auf der Aufzeichnung, um die Mitternachtssonne zu beschreiben. Die theoretische Existenz einer frigiden Zone, wo die Nächte im Sommer sehr kurz sind und die Sonne nicht auf die Sommersonnenwende setzt, war schon bekannt. Ebenso hatten Berichte über ein Land des ewigen Schnees und der Dunkelheit das Mittelmeer schon einige Jahrhunderte erreicht. Pytheas ist der erste bekannte wissenschaftliche Besucher und Reporter der Arktis, Polareis und der germanischen Stämme. Er stellte die Idee des fernen Thule der geographischen Phantasie vor, und seine Berichte über die Gezeiten sind die frühesten bekannt, um den Mond als Ursache für ihre Produktion vorzuschlagen.
