Qattara Depression
Die Qattara-Depression ist eine Depression im Nordwesten Ägyptens im Matruh-Gouvernement und ist Teil der libyschen Wüste. Es liegt unter dem Meeresspiegel und ist mit Salzpfannen, Sanddünen und Salzwiesen bedeckt. Die Region erstreckt sich zwischen den Breitengraden von 28 ° 35 'und 30 ° 25' Nord und Längengrad von 26 ° 20 'und 29 ° 02' Ost. Etwa zwanzig Kilometer westlich der Depression liegen die Oase von Siwa und Jaghbub in kleineren, aber ähnlichen Depressionen. Die Qattara-Depression enthält den zweitniedrigsten Punkt in Afrika bei -133 Metern unter dem Meeresspiegel, der niedrigste ist der See Assal in Dschibuti.
