In der Physik ist ein Quantum die minimale Menge einer physikalischen Einheit, die an einer Interaktion beteiligt ist. Dahinter findet man die fundamentale Vorstellung, dass eine physikalische Eigenschaft "quantisiert" werden kann, die als "Hypothese der Quantisierung" bezeichnet wird. Das bedeutet, dass die Größe nur bestimmte diskrete Werte annehmen kann. Ein Photon ist ein einzelnes Lichtquantum und wird als "Lichtquantum" bezeichnet. Die Energie eines an ein Atom gebundenen Elektrons wird quantisiert, was zu der Stabilität der Atome und damit der Materie im allgemeinen führt. In der Theorie der Quantenmechanik wird dies von den Physikern als Teil des fundamentalen Rahmens für das Verständnis und die Beschreibung der Natur auf der kleinsten Längenskala betrachtet.
