Die Notwendigkeit einer quantenmechanischen Beschreibung der Schwerkraft ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, daß man ein klassisches System nicht konsequent mit einem Quanten eins koppeln kann. Obwohl eine Quantentheorie der Schwerkraft erforderlich ist, um die allgemeine Relativität mit den Prinzipien der Quantenmechanik zu vereinbaren, entstehen Schwierigkeiten, wenn man versucht, die üblichen Rezepturen der Quantenfeldtheorie auf die Schwerkraft anzuwenden. Aus technischer Sicht ist das Problem, dass die Theorie, die man auf diese Weise bekommt, nicht renormalisierbar ist und daher nicht dazu verwendet werden kann, sinnvolle physikalische Vorhersagen zu machen.
