Ragtime
Ragtime ist ein musikalisches Genre, das seine spitzen Beliebtheit zwischen 1895 und 1918 genossen hat. Sein Hauptmerkmal ist sein synkopierter oder "zerlumpter" Rhythmus. Es begann als Tanzmusik in den red-light Bezirken der afrikanischen amerikanischen Gemeinschaften in St. Louis und New Orleans Jahre, bevor er als populäre Noten für Klavier veröffentlicht wurde. Ernest Hogan war ein Innovator und wichtiger Pionier, der bei der Entwicklung des musikalischen Genres geholfen hat und mit der Prägung des Begriffs Ragtime gutgeschrieben wird. Ragtime war auch eine Abänderung des von John Philip Sousa populierten Marsches, mit zusätzlichen Polyrhythmen aus afrikanischer Musik.
