Die möglichen Werte einer Zufallsvariablen können die möglichen Ergebnisse eines noch durchgeführten Experiments darstellen oder die möglichen Ergebnisse eines vergangenen Experiments, dessen bereits vorhandener Wert unsicher ist. Sie können auch begrifflich entweder die Ergebnisse eines "objektiv" zufälligen Prozesses oder die "subjektive" Zufälligkeit darstellen, die aus einer unvollständigen Kenntnis einer Menge resultiert. Die Bedeutung der Wahrscheinlichkeiten, die den Potentialwerten einer Zufallsvariablen zugeordnet sind, ist nicht Teil der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie selbst, sondern im Zusammenhang mit philosophischen Argumenten über die Interpretation der Wahrscheinlichkeit. Die Mathematik arbeitet gleich, unabhängig von der jeweiligen Interpretation im Gebrauch. The meaning of the probabilities assigned to the potential values of a random variable is not part of probability theory itself, but instead related to philosophical arguments over the interpretation of probability. The mathematics works the same regardless of the particular interpretation in use. The mathematical function describing the possible values of a random variable and their associated probabilities is known as a probability distribution.
