Rationalisten haben ein so hohes Vertrauen in die Vernunft, dass Beweise und physische Beweise unnötig sind, um die Wahrheit zu ermitteln - mit anderen Worten: "Es gibt erhebliche Wege, in denen unsere Konzepte und Erkenntnisse unabhängig von Sinneserfahrung gewonnen werden". Wegen dieses Glaubens ist der Empirismus einer der größten Konkurrenten des Rationalismus.
