In der Physik geschieht eine Rotverschiebung, wenn Licht oder andere elektromagnetische Strahlung von einem Objekt in der Wellenlänge erhöht oder zum roten Ende des Spektrums verschoben wird. Im Allgemeinen, ob die Strahlung innerhalb des sichtbaren Spektrums liegt oder nicht, bedeutet "röter" eine Erhöhung der Wellenlänge - äquivalent zu einer niedrigeren Frequenz und einer niedrigeren Photonenenergie, in Übereinstimmung mit den Wellen- und Quantentheorien des Lichts. Einige Rotverschiebungen sind ein Beispiel für den Dopplereffekt, der in der Veränderung der scheinbaren Tonhöhen der Sirenen und der Häufigkeit der Schallwellen bekannt ist, die von der Beschleunigung von Fahrzeugen emittiert werden. Eine Rotverschiebung tritt immer dann auf, wenn sich eine Lichtquelle von einem Beobachter entfernt. Eine andere Art von Rotverschiebung ist die kosmologische Rotverschiebung, die auf die Ausdehnung des Universums zurückzuführen ist, und ausreichend entfernte Lichtquellen zeigen eine Rotverschiebung, die der Rate der Zunahme ihrer Entfernung von der Erde entspricht. Schließlich sind Gravitationsrotverschiebungen ein relativistischer Effekt, der bei der elektromagnetischen Strahlung beobachtet wird, die sich aus Gravitationsfeldern bewegt.
