Direkter und indirekter Realismus
Die Frage des direkten oder "naiven" Realismus, im Gegensatz zum indirekten oder "repräsentativen" Realismus, entsteht in der Philosophie der Wahrnehmung und des Geistes aus der Debatte über die Natur der bewussten Erfahrung; Die erkenntnistheoretische Frage, ob die Welt, die wir um uns herum sehen, die wirkliche Welt selbst oder bloß eine interne Wahrnehmungskopie jener Welt ist, die durch neuronale Prozesse in unserem Gehirn erzeugt wird. Der naive Realismus wird als direkter Realismus bezeichnet, wenn er zum indirekten oder repräsentativen Realismus, der auch als erkenntnistheoretischer Dualismus bezeichnet wird, als die philosophische Position, die unsere bewusste Erfahrung nicht der realen Welt selbst, sondern einer internen Repräsentation, einer Miniatur-Virtual-Replik der Welt. Indirekter Realismus ist weitgehend gleichbedeutend mit der akzeptierten Sicht der Wahrnehmung in der Naturwissenschaft, die besagt, dass wir die äußere Welt nicht wahrnehmen und nicht wahrnehmen können, wie es wirklich ist, sondern nur unsere Ideen und Interpretationen der Welt kennen. Repräsentativismus ist eine der Schlüsselannahmen des Kognitivismus in der Psychologie. Der repräsentative Realist würde leugnen, dass "aus erster Hand Wissen" ein kohärentes Konzept ist, da Wissen immer über irgendwelche Mittel ist.
