In der Molekulargenetik ist ein Repressor ein DNA- oder RNA-bindendes Protein, das die Expression eines oder mehrerer Gene durch Bindung an den Operator hemmt. Ein DNA-bindender Repressor blockiert die Bindung von RNA-Polymerase an den Promotor und verhindert so die Transkription der Gene in Messenger-RNA. Ein RNA-bindender Repressor bindet an die mRNA und verhindert die Translation der mRNA in Protein. Diese Blockierung des Ausdrucks heißt Repression.
