Die Retinene sind chemische Derivate des Nahrungsergänzungsmittels Vitamin A, das durch Oxidationsreaktionen gebildet wird. Retinene1 ist besser bekannt als Retinaldehyd oder einfach retinal und ist von grundlegender Bedeutung bei der Transduktion von Licht in visuelle Signale im Photorezeptor der Retina. Experimentell ist es möglich, 11-cis-Retinaldehyd durch Parfümieren von Netzhautgewebepräparaten mit Retinaldehydderivaten zu ersetzen.
