Rhizoid
Rhizoide sind einfache haarähnliche Ausstülpungen, die sich von den unteren Epidermiszellen von Bryophyten, Rhodophyta und Pteridophyten erstrecken. Sie sind ähnlich in Struktur und Funktion zu den Wurzelhaaren der vaskulären Landpflanzen. Ähnliche Strukturen werden durch Algen und einige Pilze gebildet. Rhizoide werden aus einzelnen Zellen gebildet, wohingegen Wurzeln mehrzellige Organe sind, die aus mehreren Geweben bestehen, die gemeinsam eine gemeinsame Funktion ausführen. Pflanzen entstanden im Wasser, von wo aus sie allmählich in ihrem langen Verlauf der Evolution zu Land wanderten. In Wasser oder in der Nähe können Pflanzen Wasser aus ihrer Umgebung aufnehmen, ohne dass ein spezielles absorbierendes Organ oder Gewebe benötigt wird. Darüber hinaus war in den primitiven Zuständen der Pflanzenentwicklung die Gewebedifferenzierung und Teilung der Arbeit minimal, so dass die Anforderung an spezialisiertes wasserabsorbierendes Gewebe nicht erforderlich war. Sobald Pflanzen kolonisierten Land jedoch, sie erforderten spezialisierte Gewebe, um Wasser effizient aufzunehmen, und auch sich auf dem Land zu verankern. Rhizoide absorbieren Wasser durch Kapillarwirkung, in dem Wasser sich zwischen Fäden von Rhizoiden und nicht durch jeden von ihnen bewegt, wie es in Wurzeln tut.
