Myzelschnüre sind lineare Aggregationen von parallel orientierten Hyphen. Die reifen Schnüre bestehen aus breiten, leeren Gefäßhyphen, die von schmaleren Mantelhyphen umgeben sind. Schnüre können ähnlich wie Pflanzenwurzeln aussehen und haben auch häufig ähnliche Funktionen; Daher werden sie auch rhizomorphe genannt. Für parasitäre Pilze können sie helfen, die Infektion zu verbreiten, indem sie von etablierten Clustern zu uninfizierten Teilen wachsen. Die Schnüre von einigen Holz-verrottenden Pilzen können in der Lage sein, Mauerwerk zu durchdringen. Der Mechanismus der Schnurbildung ist noch nicht genau verstanden. Mathematische Modelle deuten darauf hin, dass einige Felder oder Gradienten von Signalisierungs-Chemikalien, parallel zur Schnurachse, beteiligt sein können. Rhizomorphe können bis zu 9 m lang und 5 mm im Durchmesser wachsen.
