Rhodium
Rhodium ist ein chemisches Element, das ein seltenes, silbrig-weißes, hartes und chemisch inertes Übergangsmetall und ein Mitglied der Platingruppe ist. Es hat das chemische Symbol Rh und die Ordnungszahl 45. Es besteht aus nur einem natürlich vorkommenden Isotop, 103Rh. Natürlich vorkommendes Rhodium findet man gewöhnlich als freies Metall, legiert mit ähnlichen Metallen und selten als chemische Verbindung in Mineralien wie Bowieit und Rhodplumsit. Es ist eines der seltensten und wertvollsten Edelmetalle. Rhodium ist ein so genanntes Edelmetall, korrosionsbeständig, in Platin- oder Nickel-Erzen zusammen mit den anderen Mitgliedern der Platingruppenmetalle gefunden. Es wurde im Jahre 1803 von William Hyde Wollaston in einem solchen Erz entdeckt und benannt nach der rosafarbenen Farbe einer seiner Chlorverbindungen, die nach der Reaktion mit der mächtigen Säuremischung Namensregion hergestellt wurde. Der wesentliche Einsatz des Elements ist einer der Katalysatoren in den Dreiwegekatalysatoren in Automobilen. Weil Rhodiummetall gegen Korrosion und aggressivste Chemikalien inert ist und wegen seiner Seltenheit Rhodium gewöhnlich mit Platin oder Palladium legiert und in hochtemperatur- und korrosionsbeständigen Beschichtungen aufgetragen wird.
