Die Rupie ist der gemeinsame Name für die Währungen von Indien, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychellen, Malediven, Indonesien und früher die von Burma und Afghanistan. Historisch gesehen wurde die erste Währung namens "rupiya" im 16. Jahrhundert von Sher Shah Suri, dem Gründer des Sur Empire von Nordindien, eingeführt. Der Begriff ist von rūpya, ein Sanskrit Begriff für Silbermünze, von Sanskrit rūpá, schöne Form. Auf den Malediven ist die Einheit der Währung als die rufiyah bekannt, die eine Verwandtschaft der Hindi rupiya ist. Sowohl die indischen Rupien als auch die pakistanische Rupie sind in hundert Pais oder Pice unterteilt. Die Mauretanischen und Sri Lankischen Rupien unterteilen sich in 100 Cent. Die nepalesische Rupie unterteilt sich in hundert Paisa oder vier Sukas oder zwei Mohoren. Die Afghanistan-Währung wurde auch bis 1925 in afghanische Rupien bezeichnet, wobei jede afghanische Rupie in 60 Paisas unterteilt wurde. Vor der Einführung der afghanischen Rupie im Jahre 1891 war die gesetzliche Währung die Kabuli-Rupie. Bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde Tibets offizielle Währung auch als die tibetische Rupie bekannt.
