Ein Szintillometer ist ein wissenschaftliches Gerät, das verwendet wird, um kleine Schwankungen des Brechungsindex der Luft zu messen, die durch Temperatur-, Feuchtigkeits- und Druckänderungen verursacht werden. Die Größe der Brechungsindexfluktuationen wird üblicherweise in Form von Cn ^ 2 gemessen, wobei die Strukturkonstante der Brechungsindexschwankungen, die die spektrale Amplitude der Brechungsindexschwankungen im Trägheitsbereich der Turbulenz ist. Einige Arten von Szintillometern, wie z. B. versetzte Strahl-Szintillometer, können auch die innere Skala der Brechungsindex-Schwankungen messen, die die kleinste Größe von Wirbeln im Trägheits-Teilbereich ist. Szintillometer erlauben auch Messungen der Wärmeübertragung zwischen der Erdoberfläche und der Luft oben, genannt der sensible Wärmestrom. Im Inneren Scintillometer können auch die Dissipationsrate der turbulenten kinetischen Energie und der Impulsfluss gemessen werden.
