Seleukidisches Reich
Das Seleukidenreich war ein hellenistisches Land, das von der Seleukiden-Dynastie regiert wurde, die von Seleucus I Nicator nach der Teilung des Reiches von Alexander dem Großen gegründet wurde. Seleukus erhielt Babylonia und erweitert von dort aus seine Herrschaft, um viel von Alexanders nahen östlichen Territorien zu umfassen. Auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht war es Zentralanatolien, Persien, die Levante, Mesopotamien, Kuwait, was ist jetzt Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan und Nordwestteile von Indien. Das Seleukid-Reich war ein wichtiges Zentrum der hellenistischen Kultur, das den Vorrang der griechischen Sitten beibehielt, wo eine griechisch-mazedonische politische Elite vor allem in den städtischen Gebieten dominierte. Die griechische Bevölkerung der Städte, die die dominierende Elite bildeten, wurde durch die Auswanderung aus Griechenland verstärkt. Die seleukide Expansion in Anatolien und Griechenland wurde plötzlich nach entscheidenden Niederlagen in den Händen der römischen Armee gestoppt. Ihre Versuche, ihren alten Feind zu besiegen, wurde von den römischen Forderungen frustriert.
