Semiotik ist das Studium der Sinnfertigung. Dazu gehören das Studium von Zeichen und Zeichenprozessen, Indikation, Bezeichnung, Ähnlichkeit, Analogie, Metapher, Symbolik, Bedeutung und Kommunikation. Semiotik ist eng mit dem Bereich der Linguistik verwandt, der seinerseits die Struktur und Bedeutung der Sprache genauer untersucht. Semiotik ist oft in drei Zweige unterteilt: ▪ Semantik: Beziehung zwischen Zeichen und den Dingen, auf die sie sich beziehen; Ihre denotata oder die Bedeutung ▪ Syntaktik: Beziehungen zwischen Zeichen in formalen Strukturen ▪ Pragmatik: Beziehung zwischen Zeichen und Zeichenmachern Semiotik wird häufig als wichtige anthropologische Dimensionen gesehen; Zum Beispiel schlägt Umberto Eco vor, dass jedes kulturelle Phänomen als Kommunikation untersucht werden kann. Allerdings konzentrieren sich einige Semiotiker auf die logischen Dimensionen der Wissenschaft. Sie untersuchen Bereiche, die auch den Lebenswissenschaften angehören - wie zum Beispiel, wie die Organismen ihre semiotische Nische in der Welt vorhersagen und anpassen.
