Siderit ist ein Mineral aus Eisencarbonat. Es hat seinen Namen von dem griechischen Wort σίδηρος sideros, "Eisen". Seine Kristalle gehören zum hexagonalen System und sind rhomboeder in Form, typischerweise mit gekrümmten und gestreiften Gesichtern. Es kommt auch in Massen vor. Die Farbe reicht von gelb bis dunkelbraun oder schwarz, wobei letztere auf das Vorhandensein von Mangan zurückzuführen ist. Siderit wird häufig in hydrothermalen Venen gefunden und ist mit Baryt, Fluorit, Galena und anderen assoziiert. Es ist auch ein gemeinsames diagenetisches Mineral in Schiefer und Sandsteinen, wo es manchmal Konkretionen bildet. In Sedimentgesteinen bildet sich Siderit häufig in flachen Grabstätten und seine elementare Komposition ist oft mit der Ablagerungsumgebung der umschließenden Sedimente verbunden.
