Sikkim
Sikkim ist ein Binnenländischer Staat, der sich im Himalaya-Gebirge befindet. Der Staat grenzt an Nepal im Westen, Chinas Tibet Autonome Region im Norden und Osten und Bhutan im Osten. Der indische Bundesstaat Westbengalen liegt im Süden. Mit 610.577 Einwohnern ab der Volkszählung 2011 ist Sikkim der am wenigsten bevölkerungsreiche Staat in Indien und der zweitkleinste Staat nach Goa in der Gesamtfläche und beläuft sich auf etwa 7.096 km2. Sikkim ist wegen seiner Lage im Himalaya trotzdem geographisch vielfältig. Das Klima reicht von subtropisch bis hochalpin, und Kangchenjunga, der drittgrößte Gipfel der Welt, liegt an Sikkims Grenze zu Nepal. Sikkim ist wegen seiner Kultur, Landschaft und Biodiversität ein beliebtes Touristenziel. Es hat auch die einzige offene Landgrenze zwischen Indien und China. Sikkims Hauptstadt und größte Stadt ist Gangtok. Nach der Legende besuchte der buddhistische Guru Padmasambhava Sikkim im 8. Jahrhundert n. Chr., Führte den Buddhismus ein und stellte die Ära der sikkimischen Monarchie voraus. Sikkims Namgyal-Dynastie wurde 1642 gegründet. In den nächsten 150 Jahren zeigte das Königreich häufige Überfälle und territoriale Verluste an nepalesischen Eindringlinge.
