Chinesisch-tibetische Sprachen
Die chinesisch-tibetischen Sprachen sind eine Familie von mehr als 400 Sprachen, die in Ostasien, Südostasien und Teilen von Südasien gesprochen werden. Die Familie ist an zweiter Stelle nur die indoeuropäischen Sprachen in Bezug auf die Anzahl der Muttersprachler. Die chinesisch-tibetischen Sprachen mit den meisten Muttersprachlern sind die chinesischen Sprachen, die burmesischen und die tibetischen Sprachen. Viele chinesisch-tibetische Sprachen werden von kleinen Gemeinden in abgelegenen Berggebieten gesprochen und sind schlecht dokumentiert. Mehrere Low-Level-Gruppierungen sind gut etabliert, aber die übergeordnete Struktur der Familie bleibt unklar. Obwohl die Familie oft als in Sinitische und Tibeto-Burman-Zweige unterteilt ist, wurde nicht überzeugend gezeigt, dass die nicht-chinesischen Sprachen eine monophyletische Gruppe darstellen. Eine Minderheit von Forschern nennt die ganze Familie "Tibeto-Burman" und der Name "Trans-Himalaya" wurde ebenfalls vorgeschlagen.
