Der Solvay-Prozess- oder Ammoniak-Soda-Prozess ist der wichtigste industrielle Prozess zur Herstellung von Soda. Der Ammoniak-Soda-Prozess wurde in seiner modernen Form von Ernest Solvay in den 1860er Jahren entwickelt. Die Zutaten für diesen Prozess sind leicht verfügbar und kostengünstig: Salzsole und Kalkstein. Die weltweite Produktion von Soda-Asche im Jahr 2005 wurde auf 42 Milliarden Kilogramm geschätzt, die mehr als sechs Kilogramm pro Jahr für jede Person auf der Erde ist. Solvay-basierte Chemieanlagen produzieren nun etwa drei Viertel dieser Versorgung, wobei der Rest aus natürlichen Ablagerungen abgebaut wird.
