In der Astronomie ist die Sternklassifikation die Klassifikation der Sterne, die auf ihren spektralen Eigenschaften beruht. Licht aus dem Stern wird analysiert, indem man es mit einem Prisma oder Beugungsgitter in ein Spektrum aufteilt, das den Regenbogen von Farben zeigt, die mit Absorptionslinien durchsetzt sind. Jede Zeile zeigt ein Ion eines bestimmten chemischen Elements an, wobei die Linienstärke die Häufigkeit dieses Ions angibt. Die relative Häufigkeit der verschiedenen Ionen variiert mit der Temperatur der Photosphäre. Die Spektralklasse eines Sterns ist ein kurzer Code, der den Ionisationszustand zusammenfasst und ein objektives Maß für die Temperatur und Dichte der Photosphäre ergibt. Die meisten Stars werden derzeit unter dem Morgan-Keenan-System unter Verwendung der Buchstaben O, B, A, F, G, K, M, L, T und Y, einer Sequenz von den heißesten bis zum coolsten, klassifiziert. Die Typen R und N sind Kohlenstoff-basierte Sterne, und der Typ S ist Zirkoniummonoxid-basierte Sterne. Jede Buchstabenklasse wird dann unter Verwendung einer Ziffernziffer unterteilt, wobei 0 am heißesten ist und 9 am coolsten ist.
