Spectrin ist ein zytoskeletales Protein, das die intrazelluläre Seite der Plasmamembran in eukaryotischen Zellen leitet. Das Protein wird spektrin genannt, da es zuerst als eine Hauptproteinkomponente von menschlichen roten Blutkörperchen isoliert wurde, die mit milden Reinigungsmitteln behandelt worden waren; Die Detergenzien lysierten die Zellen und das Hämoglobin und andere zytoplasmatische Komponenten wurden ausgewaschen. Im Lichtmikroskop konnte die Grundform der roten Blutkörperchen noch gesehen werden, da das Spektrum, das das submembranöse Zytoskelett enthielt, die Form der Zelle im Umriss bewahrte. Dies wurde bekannt als eine rote Blutkörperchen "Ghost", und so wurde das Hauptprotein des Geistes als Spektrum bezeichnet. Spectrin bildet fünfeckige oder sechseckige Anordnungen, bildet ein Gerüst und spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Erhaltung der Plasmamembran-Integrität und der Zytoskelettstruktur.
