Milz
Die Milz ist ein Organ, das in praktisch allen Wirbeltieren gefunden wird. Ähnlich wie bei einem großen Lymphknoten wirkt er primär als Blutfilter. Es ist möglich, die Milz zu entfernen, ohne das Leben zu gefährden. Die Milz spielt eine wichtige Rolle in Bezug auf rote Blutkörperchen und das Immunsystem. Es entfernt alte rote Blutkörperchen und hält eine Blutreserve, die im Falle eines hämorrhagischen Schocks wertvoll sein kann, und recycelt auch Eisen. Als Teil des mononuklearen Phagozytensystems verstofflicht es Hämoglobin, das aus seneszierenden Erythrozyten entfernt wurde. Der Globinanteil des Hämoglobins wird zu seinen konstitutiven Aminosäuren abgebaut, und der Hämabschnitt wird zu Bilirubin metabolisiert, der in der Leber entfernt wird. Die Milz synthetisiert Antikörper in ihrem weißen Zellstoff und entfernt Antikörper-beschichtete Bakterien und Antikörper-beschichtete Blutzellen durch Blut- und Lymphknotenumlauf. Eine Studie, die im Jahr 2009 mit Mäusen veröffentlicht wurde, stellte fest, dass die Milz in ihrer Reserve die Hälfte der Monozyten des Körpers innerhalb des roten Zellstoffs enthält. Diese Monozyten, beim Bewegen zu verletztem Gewebe, verwandeln sich in dendritische Zellen und Makrophagen, während sie die Gewebeheilung fördern.
