Die statocyst ist ein Gleichgewichtssensorrezeptor, der in einigen aquatischen Wirbellosen vorhanden ist, einschließlich Muscheln, Nesseltiere, Stachelhäuter, Kopffüßer und Krebstiere. Eine ähnliche Struktur findet sich auch in Xenoturbella. Die statocyst besteht aus einer sackartigen Struktur, die eine mineralisierte Masse und zahlreiche innervierte Sinneshaare enthält. Die Trägheit des Statoliths bewirkt, dass es gegen die Setae drängt, wenn das Tier beschleunigt. Die Ablenkung von setae durch den Statolith in Reaktion auf die Schwerkraft aktiviert Neuronen, die Rückmeldung an das Tier bei der Änderung der Orientierung und die Erleichterung des Gleichgewichts. Mit anderen Worten, der Statolith verschiebt sich, wenn sich das Tier bewegt. Jede Bewegung, die groß genug ist, um den Organismus aus dem Gleichgewicht zu bringen, veranlasst den Statolith, gegen kleine Borsten zu putzen, die wiederum eine Botschaft an das Gehirn senden, um das Gleichgewicht zu korrigieren.

The statocyst is a balance sensory receptor present in some aquatic invertebrates, including bivalves, cnidarians, echinoderms, cephalopods, and crustaceans. A similar structure is also found in Xenoturbella. The statocyst consists of a sac-like structure containing a mineralised mass and numerous innervated sensory hairs. The statolith's inertia causes it to push against the setae when the animal accelerates. Deflection of setae by the statolith in response to gravity activates neurons, providing feedback to the animal on change in orientation and allowing balance to be maintained. In other words, the statolith shifts as the animal moves. Any movement large enough to throw the organism off balance causes the statolith to brush against tiny bristles which in turn send a message to the brain to correct its balance.
