Strauss
Strauss, Strauß oder Straus ist ein allgemeiner germanischer Familienname. Außerhalb Deutschlands und Österreichs steht Strauß immer Strauss. Die Familien mit dem Strauss-Namen repräsentieren eine genetisch abwechslungsreiche Gruppe von jüdischen und gentile germanischen Ursprungs. Der Name wurde von den Familien im germanischen Bereich seit mindestens 1000 Jahren verwendet. Der Oberherr von Gröna zum Beispiel ging mit dem Namen Struz und benutzte das Bild eines Straußes als Symbol. Beispiele dafür waren noch auf der 1.000 Jahre alten Kirchenglocke dieser Stadt zu sehen. "Struz" oder "Strutz" ist die norddeutsche Form des Wortes "Strauss", das ist das moderne deutsche Wort für einen "Strauß". Einige der frühesten jüdischen Träger des Namens hagelten aus der Judengasse im mittelalterlichen Frankfurt, wo Familien unter dem Namen der Häuser bekannt sind, die sie bewohnten. Alle Häuser hatten Namen und diese waren Haus Strauss, komplett mit einem Bild von einem Strauß an der Fassade. Als für die steuerlichen Zwecke Napoleon im Jahre 1808 Familiennamen obligatorisch machte, beschlossen einige jüdische Familien, den Straus-Namen zu übernehmen.
