In den späten 1950er und frühen 60er Jahren, als die strukturelle Linguistik vor ernsthaften Herausforderungen von Noam Chomsky stand und damit an Bedeutung gewann, entdeckten eine Reihe von Gelehrten in den Geisteswissenschaften die Saussure-Konzepte für den Einsatz in ihren jeweiligen Fachgebieten.
