So wurde der später-importierte Begriff ein Synonym für das englische Wortspiel oder im Modern English, Shire. Da ein Bezirk eine administrative Teilung des Königreichs war, entwickelte sich der Begriff "Grafschaft", um eine administrative Aufteilung der nationalen Regierung in den meisten modernen Gebrauch zu benennen.
