Substituent
In der organischen Chemie und Biochemie ist ein Substituent ein Atom oder eine Gruppe von Atomen, die anstelle eines Wasserstoffatoms an der Stammkette eines Kohlenwasserstoffs substituiert sind. Die Begriffe Substituent, Seitenketten-, Gruppen-, Zweig- oder Pendelgruppe werden fast austauschbar verwendet, um Äste aus einer Grundstruktur zu beschreiben, obwohl gewisse Unterscheidungen im Zusammenhang mit der Polymerchemie gemacht werden. In Polymeren erstrecken sich Seitenketten von einer Grundgerüststruktur aus. In Proteinen sind Seitenketten an die alpha-Kohlenstoffatome des Aminosäure-Grundgerüsts gebunden. Das Suffix yl wird verwendet, wenn organische Verbindungen benannt werden, die eine einzelne Bindung enthalten, die einen Wasserstoff ersetzt; -yliden und -ylidin werden mit Doppelbindungen bzw. Dreifachbindungen eingesetzt. Zusätzlich werden bei der Benennung von Kohlenwasserstoffen, die einen Substituenten enthalten, Positionsnummern verwendet, um anzugeben, welches Kohlenstoffatom der Substituent anhängt, wenn diese Information benötigt wird, um zwischen Isomeren zu unterscheiden. Der von einem Substituenten ausgeübte polare Effekt ist eine Kombination der induktiven Wirkung und der mesomeren Wirkung. Zusätzliche sterische Effekte ergeben sich aus dem Volumen, das von einem Substituenten eingenommen wird.
